This is a homeschooler's dream come true!
Hi, I'm Rowen! I’m a ten year old homeschool student from Houma, Louisiana.
In 2022, my mom saw an advertisement for a play in Morgan City and brought my brother and me to check it out. It looked like so much fun, so when the director announced an upcoming drama camp at the end of the play, I was excited to sign up. My first drama camp was a blast, so I've signed up for almost every camp since then.
I've made a TON of new friends at drama camp. My brother has even joined in with me! We've learned so much from our instructors and all of the friends we've made.
I was so excited when I learned that Mr. Milner owner of the Baillie Players, had been writing an original musical called HomeSquad. It's about a homeschooler switching places with a public schooler- Freaky Friday style! Since I'm a homeschooler, I was really hopeful that I'd get a chance to see Mr. Milner's play one day.
Little did I know his play would lead me to one of the greatest opportunity of my life!
While Mr. Milner was writing and preparing his musical, he also led drama camps all across the South. At each camp, he would invite a few hardworking students to audition for HomeSquad. I went to camp after camp and didn’t get picked… until one day, I finally did! You can watch that amazing moment below—it was unforgettable!
Milner told us that auditioning meant we would be competing with about 300 kids from all over the Southeast for a limited number of roles. I had to pick a song, learn how to introduce myself (called a “slate”), record my audition, and submit it online… then wait.
At first, I wanted to sing “Hakuna Matata” from The Lion King, but my vocal coach suggested “When I Get My Name in Lights” from The Boy from Oz instead!
I worked really hard to learn it before the deadline and finally submitted my audition.
